Man sentenced to 9-month imprisonment for abusing Gov. Masari on social media


One Gambo Saeed has been sentenced to nine imprisonment by a Katsina Chief Magistrate’s Court for insulting and defaming the character of Gov. Aminu Masari of Katsina State on social media.

Saeed, a resident of Muduru village in Mani Local Government Area of the state was prosecuted following complaints received from Mr. Mansur Ali Mashi, Senior Special Assistant (SSA), to the Governor on Radio Monitoring by the police.

“Mashi said the accused person abused Masari and called him names on social media. “He said the accused person posted on the media that it was Gov. Masari who influenced the impeachment of Speaker of Katsina State House of Assembly, Aliyu Muduru,” the police prosecutor, Inspector Isa Liti told the court.

Liti added that the social media user was arraigned for intentional insult, defamation and inciting disturbance, adding that the charges were in accordance with sections 399, 392 and 114 of the Penal Code.

Delivering judgment on Monday, Chief Magistrate Abdu Ladan, said the court has found the accused person guilty of the said offences.

Ladan explained that each charge attracts three years imprisonment. Consequently, he sentenced the accused to nine months imprisonment without option of fine.
