A student of Maritime Academy, Oron in Cross Rivers State hanged himself on Thursday, exactly 10 years his father died in an auto crash.
Effiong Otu (pictured) had been making disturbing posts on his facebook page following a recent break-up with his girlfriend.
“It’s not about being engaged, married or in a relationship. It’s about being happy, safe, secured, relieved and feeling good. It’s about peaceful state of mind, it’s about sleeping at night without the fear of losing what you’ve got. It’s being yourself and not someone else, it’s about feeling loved, happy, respected, understood, cared for and appreciated.! Goodnight my beautiful people,” the 21-year-old posted on his facebook page on the 6th of July.
Effiong chose four days after the post, which fell on the day of his late father’s 10-year remembrance anniversary to bid a final farewell to the world.
Eyewitnesses say he was found hanging in his room at Diamond Hill, a few minutes after he collected a rope from a neighbour. It was said that his mother, Grace Otu, a nurse at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital just stepped out of their house around 3.00pm when the incident happened.
