5,100 Card readers in Ondo burnt – INEC

Fire has burnt down the card readers kept in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

The fire started at around 8.00pm, according to multiple reports.

Men of the fire service whose office is adjacent the INEC’s office could only watched on the sidelines as the inferno razed the section where card readers are kept, complaining of lack of water to put it out.

Official account by the electoral body attributed the incident to electrical surge claiming it equally affected the ICT Unit.

INEC Commissioner in charge of Information and Voters Education, Festus Okoye said 5,100 card readers were burnt, including the 1,000 card readers delivered to Ondo INEC from Osun State.
