Atiku is one of my two mistakes, Says Obasanjo

Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, on Saturday, has told of the two mistakes he made in his public life, listing his choice of the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku as his running mate then in 1999 while contesting for Presidency. Nigeria number one position as one of them.

Obasanjo opened up on this at the finals of the National Exhibition and Awards, the Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship organised, which was held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

In response to one of the students’ questions on his regret in public life, the former president said his refusal to comply with the request of United States to grant him asylum when they got wind of former Military leader, Sani Abacha’s plot to arrest him, saying his decision to stay put in Nigeria and his eventual arrest and long detention may have cost him his life.

The other, he said was picking Atiku who later became the Vice President twice upon their victory at the polls as his running mate when he had the option to make other choices.

He added that he would have rued the day he made the purported wrong choice if not for God.

His word, “One of the mistakes I made was picking my number two when I wanted to become the President. But because it was a genuine mistake, God saved me.

“The second one was when Abacha wanted to arrest me. When he wanted to arrest me, I was told by the American ambassador that they would arrest me and that America had asked that I should be given an asylum. I said ‘No’. It could have been a mistake because I could have lost my life.

“I will say there are many things that could have been a mistake but God saved me from them all.”
