The Chairman Designate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Abdulrasheed Bawa has been promoted from the Deputy Chief Detective Superintendent to the next rank, according to report.
Bawa who was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari as EFCC chair earlier in the week was a level 13 officer and a Deputy Chief Superintendent in the police.
His appointment goes against the grain of Section 2 of the EFCC Act, which stated that a person who will be appointed as chairman of the commission must have at least 15 years experience and must be the rank of an Assistant Commissioner of Police or its equivalent.
Consequently, it has drawn opposition with calls in some quarters urging the Senate not to confirm the 40-year-old and a lawyer, Osuagwu Ugochukwu, filing a suit before a Federal High Court in Abuja seeking to stop the red chamber from confirming him.
