A woman has been arrested in Lagos State for using a false pregnancy to trick unsuspecting passers-by into giving her alms.
The Lagos State Task Force on Environmental and Special Offences made the arrest on Thursday following a tip-off from members of the public that she had been using her “heavy pregnancy” to deceive and solicit alms under the Ikeja bridge where she plies her trade.
The 29-year-old identified as Mrs. Kemi Durojaiye(pictured) was paraded with a pillow, which she hid under her dress to fake a protruded belly, to defraud unsuspecting members of the public.
Speaking on the arrest, Mr. Bayo Sulaiman, Chairman of the Task Force, explained that the suspect confessed to the dishonest business after arrest and even displayed to officials how she faked the pregnancy to appeal to people`s sympathy and defraud them.
A medical expert, Dr. Tunde Aremu described her health situation as Factitious disorder (FD).
This he said is a mental disturbances in which patients intentionally act physically or mentally ill without obvious benefits.
“FD is also called pathomimia, it is pretending illness when the individual has a clear motive—usually to benefit economically or to avoid legal trouble,” he explained.
