Embattled on all sides for his determination to impose his long-term business ally and banker as heir to the gubernatorial throne in Akwa Ibom State, Governor Godswill Akpabio is said to have for a second insisted on administering another round of fetish oath (known in local parlance as mbiam) to Mr. Udom Emmanuel, the current Secretary to the State Government.

According to our sources, Emmanuel was said to have been forced to take this local oath to reassure the governor of his loyalty and willingness to shield him from prosecution when he emerges the governor of Akwa Ibom state in 2015.

The governor is said to be quite jittery, owing to the calibre of opposition to his plot of imposing Udom Emmanuel whom he brought from the banking sector last year after he disgraced his old-time friend, Umana Okon Umama out of office.

We understand that aside from giving him some financial insurance, Akpabio also wanted assurances of protection from prosecution for offences ranging from money laundering, political abduction and other criminal offences after his exit on May 29, 2015. The oath was allegedly administered in Akpabio’s country home in Ukana Ikot Ntuen, Essien Udim Local Government Area.

The ritual was said to have taken place at night inside the Akpabio compound and was witnessed by the governor’s core loyalists. The chief priest who administered the oath was said to have been brought in from another state, and his face was painted with charcoal to conceal his identity.

Apart from the SSG, five other cabinet members were said to have also taken the oath to assure Akpabio that they would not betray him when he assists them to get to various positions.
