Details have emerged on how a Police Inspector, Boluwaji Temenu, was killed when gunmen attacked the Police Division at Okuta Elerinla area of Akure, the Ondo State capital.
The attacked occurred on Monday around 1am.
Police sources said the gunmen scaled the perimeter fencing to gain access into the station.
The source said the motive of the gunmen could have been to steal arms and ammunition as the two male suspects in custody as of the time of the attack were held for minor offences.
It was gathered the two policemen on duty exchanged gunfire with the gunmen in an attempt to repel the attack.
The slain policeman was said to have quickly relocated the detained suspects especially women to another area of the station while the other engaged the hoodlums.
Sources said it was torch light switched on by the slain policeman that gave him away and the gunmen fired towards his direction killing him instantly.
Ondo Police spokesman, SP Fumilayo Odunlami, who confirmed the attack said policemen on duty engaged the attackers in a shootout and stopped them from gaining access into the station.
According to her: “During the cross fire, one of our gallant station guards was hit by a bullet, he later died on his way to the hospital.
“The Commissioner of Police, Oyeyemi Oyediran, has ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department to take over the case and ensure the perpetrators are arrested.
“He is also using this medium to encourage the people of the state to go about their lawful duty without fear, as the days of these criminals are numbered.”
