Imo Speaker impeached

Amidst tight security, lawmakers in the Imo State House of Assembly yesterday impeached their Speaker, Paul Emeziem.

They replaced him with the member representing Obowo Constituency, Kennedy Ibeh.

The impeachment of Emeziem, an All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker representing Onuimo Constituency, followed a resolution by 19 out of the 27 members of the Assembly during their special sitting.

In a motion moved by the member representing Ìrå East State Constituency, Chigozie Nwaneri, the lawmakers accused the former Speaker of gross misconduct and abuse of office.

The lawmakers, who conducted the special plenary behind closed-door, hurriedly left the Assembly premises after their action.

It was learnt that Deputy Speaker Amara Iwuanyanwu, who was purportedly impeached with the erstwhile Speaker, stormed the Assembly with six lawmakers and some security personnel.

Iwuanyanwu was reinstated to his position.

Emeziem had, last Tuesday, announced the impeachment of Iwanyanwu as the Deputy Speaker in a resolution passed by 18 members, but did not give any reason for the removal.

Also, Ibeh yesterday announced the suspension of Emeziem, Okey Onyekanma and Ekene Nnodimele.
