A gay couple’s dream wedding was turned into a nightmare in Kano State after the event came to an abrupt end following the invasion by police and officers of Hisbah Command, an agency that promotes principles of Islam.

Guests had seated at Hills and Valley, a recreational resort in Dawakin Kudu in the outskirt of Kano metropolis where the event took place to witness the occasion when security operatives stormed the area and arrested fifteen people including the bridegroom.

Parading the suspects on Monday, Hisbah Commander General, Sheik Aminu Daurawa(pictured right) said the command swung into action as soon as the news of the wedding between the gay couple(file image) who were said to be in their mid-twenties reached them.

Daurawa gave the name of the bridegroom who was apprehended as Faruk Maiduguri and the bride as Abba. He said security operatives are on the trail of the latter.

Same-sex sexual activity is illegal in Nigeria. The maximum punishment in the twelve northern states that have adopted Shari’a law is death by stoning while in the south under the secular criminal laws, the maximum punishment is 14 years’ imprisonment.
