The Lagos State Government yesterday threatened to sanction lottery operators that fail to pay winners their prizes within 48-hour.
The General Manager of the State Lotteries Board, Seun Anibaba, who issued the threat in an interview he granted Punch, disclosed that the board would no longer tolerate any acts that jeopardise gamblers’ rights to quality service in the state.
The GM also decried the illegal raiding of betting centres by security operatives. saying the situation was worrisome.
According to him, “Operators are usually expected to pay winnings within 48 hours. We intervene in cases between operators and game users and apply sanctions where necessary. We also manage the risks of the operators. On sports betting, for instance, no operator can pay more than N10m on one ticket.
“Aside from the issue of underage betting, the major problem confronting the industry is illegal raiding of bet shops by security personnel. We have intervened several times and spoken with the police, but the problem keeps recurring.”
