Board of the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, has taken a swipe at Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, over the hike in hate speech fine.
Mohammed had announced hike in hate speech fine from N500,000 to N5m and sequel the NBC slammed Nigeria Info 99.3FM N5m over an interview it granted former presidential aspirant, Obadiah Mailafia, wherein he alleged an unnamed northern governor of being Boko Haram leader.
But the broadcast regulation regulation body’s board has alleged the minister of acting ultra vires by single handedly increasing the fine without seeking the members’ input.
Speaking at a press conference they organized, the board’s chairman, Ikra Bilbis, said Mohammed circumvented the laid down procedures saying the fine review was undertaken every four-year involving all stakeholders including NBC staff, ex-DGs, Directors, private media organisations, academia and notable media experts.
He said on this occasion, the minister ignored the process, corralled his lackeys and acted unilaterally.
According to him, “The minister’s version of the revised code does not meet any known criteria of due process and inclusiveness of stakeholders.”
