A newlywed couple at Rijiyar Lemo in Fagge Local Government area of Kano State have killed their newborn baby to avoid the shame of being seen as fornicators.
Kano State is one of the states in the north where Sharia is fully in operation, and having children outside wedlock is forbidden by the Islamic law.
The couple identified simply as Aminu and Fa’iza exchanged marital vows about a month ago in an Islamic marriage ceremony, and were not expected to have intercourse prior to the wedding.
But about five weeks after the event, indication emerged that the couple had slept together long before they married after Fa’iza was secretly delivered of a baby girl. And to cover their tracks up, it was alleged that the couple three days after the birth, snatched life out of the newborn baby.
It was further gathered that Fa’iza used girdle to flatten her protruding belly and hid the pregnancy during gestation period.
Speaking to newsmen in his office at the weekend, the Commander Fagge Local Government Hisbah command, Ustaz Salisu Umar Rijiyar Lemo, who made the disclosure said that the couple had tied knot just a couple of month ago but the bride gave birth to a baby girl within the period, adding that the situation prompted them to kill the baby to avoid embarrassment.
According to him, the couple conceived the idea of digging a shallow grave to bury the baby after committing the dastardly act, noting that but their plan proved futile as they were sighted by some good Samaritans in the area who reported the matter to the command.
He added that the couple, when arrested at the command, could not conceal the motive behind the sinister intention as they told the officials that they purposefully killed the newly born baby to avoid any embarrassment.
Ustaz Umar further said that the couple according to investigations, already had a pre-marital affair through which the bride was impregnated by the groom, adding that the shameful act led the people of the area to realise that the marriage was consummated to keep everyone in darkness as far as their relationship was concerned.
But in spite of the admission of guilt by the couple, the Hisbah command is currently conducting a thorough investigation into the matter with a view to handing over the case to the police for onward transmission to a court of law.
