Obasanjo meets with Benin President, pleads asylum for Igboho

Report has emerged that former President Olusegun Obasanjo interceded with Benin Republic to grant the asylum request of Sunday Adeyemo, aka Sunday Igboho.

Igboho has been in detention in Benin since July 19, 2021 when he was arrested by Interpol at the Cadjèhoun Airport in Cotonou alongside his wife Ropo who was left off the hook.

The embattled Yoruba nation agitator is having his days in court and has been a subject of extradition demand by the Nigerian government.

However, he is seeking asylum in the French colony, a request which reportedly gained traction with Obasanjo.

The former President on a condolence visit to Beninise President, Nicephore Soglo, who lost his wife used the occasion to lobby his host to ensure Igboho is not extradited to Nigeria per The Cable.

“He also met with Patrice Talon. The purpose of the meeting was to seek soft-landing for Sunday Igboho.

“He’s asking the Beninise authorities to grant the separatist leader asylum, and not to return him to Nigeria,” the news medium quoted an unnamed source who has knowledge of the meeting’s finer details as saying.
