OBJ Golf Tourney: Obasanjo hails First Bank, promises to dump squash

Ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo has heaped plaudit on First Bank Nigeria Limited, sponsor of the OBJ Golf Tournament.

The curtain was brought down on the 5th edition of the competition held at Abeokuta Golf Club, in Ogun State at the weekend with Olajide Owolabi Michael beating Tolu Olugbemi to retain the title while Harrison Karuiku came third.

In regard to the ladies category, Sade Opawunmi clinched the title while Club Captain, Kola Adeneye, won that of the veteran.

Speaking at the closing tournament, Obasanjo (rtd), showered encomium on First Bank for keeping faith with the annual event, adding that he would dump squash for golf if the bank did not back out from sponsoring the event.

“I want to show my appreciation to FirstBank of Nigeria Limited and Abeokuta Golf Club for keeping faith and maintaining this event, and I hope it remains a regular tournament on the nation’s golf calendar.

“Since First Bank has maintained the Lagos Open Golf Championship for 60 years, the Kaduna Polo (Georgian Cup), which enters 102nd edition this year, the Dala Harcourt (Tennis) which has also ran for 30-years, OBJ Golf tournament should also be maintained.

“First Bank also sponsors the annual Sardauna Northern Durbar Horse Racing competition at Kano Turf Club.”

Continued: “I believe that at a stage in my life, I will take it easy and play the gentlemen sport like golf. Golf is more relaxing, gentler, more entertaining and friendlier and I believe there is no sport like it.”
