Painter impersonates Lagos monarch to defraud Facebook lover of N51m

Oba Elegushi

A painter, Moses Olaitan, and his accomplice, Segun Omoshola, have been arrested for posing as the Elegushi of Ikate land, Oba Saheed Elegushi, to defraud a woman the former met on Facebook of N51m.

Olaitan was alleged to have used Elegushi’s image on the social media to defraud the unnamed woman.

The suspects were paraded on Thursday at the Lagos State Police Command in Ikeja where they told newsmen their roles in the scam.

According to Olaitan, the woman connected to him online and told him she would like to be married to a monarch. In response, he said to her that she would have to perform some rituals, which would involve money.

The lady reportedly fell for the lie and asked him to send his bank account details but he talked to Omoshola to give him an account.

“I was paid N2.5m and it was when I was brought to the command that I got to know that what she paid was N51m. How I was arrested was that the police tracked my cousin’s number. I was making arrangements for my birthday when the police arrested me,” he told newsmen.

In his own confession, Omoshola said, “I took him to those who provided the account used in collecting the money from the woman. I collected N3.5m. I was shocked when I heard that the money was N51m.”
