FG denies report of plastic rice

The federal government has denied report that plastic rice is in circulation in the market, saying preliminary laboratory tests revealed there was no evidence to back up the claims.

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) had on Monday intercepted 102 bags of rice with no date of manufacture, and branded ‘Beat Tomato Rice’.rice

Media reports said the seized bags of rice was plastic rice following an interview the Customs Area Controller of F.O.U. Comptroller Mohammed Haruna granted on Tuesday.
But denying the report on Thursday in a tweet on his twitter handle, @Fmohnigeria, Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole wrote: “I have just been briefed by DG NAFDAC on Plastic Rice reports. Preliminary test results reveal there is no evidence backing claims.

“Tests conducted; floating – negative, cooking – normal, odour normal, color – off white rice grains, moisture – 13.0, pre-ashing – normal.

“NAFDAC will release detailed findings to public as soon as it concludes investigations. We urge all Nigerians to remain calm for now.”
