Skit makers who joked about Ganduje sentenced to beating, others

Two skit makers, Mubarak Isa Muhammad and Nazifi Muhammad Bala who made a joke about Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje for which they were prosecuted have been found guilty.

In the skit, Mubarak and Bala spoke in pidgin. In it, they said Ganduje is a heavy sleeper and has a propensity to usurp lands that do not belong to him, saying,  “The preaching is about a man called Ganduje, husband of Gwaggo and father of Balaraba. The man, Ganduje, is one that Kano people do not trust because any parcel of land he sets his eyes on, he must sell it.”

It was music to some ears, but not so in official quarters in Kano leading to the pair’s arrest and prosecution.

A judgment was handed down to them on Monday by the No Man’s Land Magistrates Court. It ordered 20 lashes to be administered on both while they must wash the court’s toilets and sweep its premises for 30 days for defaming the character of Kano State Governor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, on their Tiktok social media account.

The convicts had earlier pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of defamation and inciting public disturbance slammed against them.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), the two men posted on their Tiktok account known as Unique Pickin, that Governor Ganduje does not see a land without selling it and that he sleeps a lot.

The prosecutor, Wada Ahmad Wada, Principal State Counsel, Kano State Ministry of Justice, applied for summary trial.

Among other punishments meted out to them, Magistrate Aminu Muhammad Gabari ordered their payment of N10,000 each in fine for defaming the character of the governor and another fine of N10,000 each for inciting public disturbance.
