Smartphone manufacturers are being urged to create a ‘drive safe’ mode – similar to the ‘flight mode’ option, which will block calls, texts and emails.

The call on the manufacturers followed study from the National Safety Council(NSC) found that 26 per cent of all car accidents were caused by a driver using a cell phone.

The study by the nongovernmental public service organisation promoting health and safety in United States, said cell phone use while driving contributes to more than one-in-four car accidents in the US.

In the event manufacturers heed the call mobile phones could soon be blocked from working while cars are being driven to deter people from using them at the wheel.
