An undergraduate has been arrested for allegedly killing his 87-year-old father at Umuoriehi in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State, police said.
The accused Chijiioke Ezebuiro (pictured), a student of Madonna University, Okija, denied committing the crime, which happened on June 30, last month.
He told reporters that he found his father, Dr. Emmanuel Ezebuiro dead in the pool of his own blood when he came out of the bathroom where he had gone to take his bath.
He said, “After taking my bath as I was going towards my room, I saw people screaming in my father’s room.
“When I got there, I saw my brother and my cousin. I was shocked to see blood on my father’s head. I was so scared I had to go downstairs to call one of my cousins.
“When I came back, I asked them what happened and none of them told me anything. The next thing was for me to see the police coming to arrest me, saying I am a murderer, that’s all.”
However, his elder brother who equally lives in the same house with his immediate family, and was out as at the time the incident took place had doubt about Chijiioke’s innocence. It was gathered from him that the suspect had threatened to kill the deceased several times.
According to Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Geoffrey Ogbonna, the suspect was arrested because he was the only one at home when the deceased was brutally murdered.
He added that police preliminary investigations revealed that there was no evidence of forced entry into their house where the incident took place.
