The Nigeria Bottling Company (NBC) Limited and other producers of carbonated and non-carbonated drinks marketed in Nigeria have been directed to print expiry dates on all their products.
NBC was also directed to print labels on Fanta and Sprite drinks, warning that the products were harmful when taken with ascorbic acid (Vitamin C).
The orders were issued by the House of Representatives on Wednesday and it will take effect from January 2019,
The directives followed the adoption of the report of the ad-hoc committee headed by the House leader, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila that investigated the alleged high concentration of benzoic acid and sunset yellow additives in Fanta and Sprite, both products of the NBC. The committee was.
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) was also mandated by the House to compel producers/manufacturers to indicate all chemicals, acids, colorants and preservatives contained on their products on the packs or bottles no matter how negligible they may be.
