The Super Eagles players have threatened to shun the quarter final match against Algeria in the ongoing AFCON in protest against non-payment of outstanding winning bonuses by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
In a bid to bring their threat home to the authorities, the players boycotted training on Wednesday morning and refused to travel as scheduled to Marrakech for the coming Saturday’s match.
This account was given by several journalists reporting from Morocco, including sports journalist Adepoju Tobi Samuel.
“BREAKING NEWS: Super Eagles players & officials boycott training today in Morocco because of unresolved issues with outstanding payments,” Nigerian sports journalist, Pooja, who was with the team in Morocco posted on X.
BBC journalist, Olúwashínà Okeleji, who’s equally covering the tournament corroborated the report with this post on the said platform: “Players and coaching staff of #Nigeria are waiting on #AFCON2025 bonus payments.”
Okeleji added, “Win bonuses from four matches – VS Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda & Mozambique – have yet to be received.”
He said further: “Squad remain focus but will NOT train or travel to Marrakech on Thursday if this isn’t resolved.”
Recall that in November, the team also threatened to boycott their World Cup qualifier against Gabon, citing unpaid entitlements from the Nigerian authorities.
