A former governor from one of the southern states is said to be under investigation for his alleged connection to the army officers detained over an alleged coup plot, Daily Trust has reported.

Recall that the Defence Headquarters had said that the military arrested some of its men for career stagnation among other claims.

Reports in the media that followed later contradicted the reason the military gave for the affected officers’ arrests saying it was due to move by them to carry out a coup on October 25.

The above mentioned publication has now shared a supposed dossier on the coup claim.

It reported that there is suspicion that a former governor financed the alleged plot, said to involve 16 officers who the Defence Headquarters declared that they were arrested for certain unprofessional conduct, which is under investigation.

According to the report, the detainees, including a Brigadier-General, a Colonel and others below that rank were allegedly officers attached to the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).

“Yes, that is true. There are civilian accomplices, including a former governor, but the extent of their involvement is being investigated. For now, there are 16 officers involved and in custody,” it quoted a source, who added, “a former civilian governor is being investigated over the matter. He is also a former operative in the oil and gas sector, but his involvement has not been confirmed.”

The publication wrote that the former governor might be invited for interrogation should credible links between him and the detained officers be established, stating that the Brigadier-General being referred to is from Niger State.

“The Colonel from Nasarawa State that is being investigated is also from a very influential family. His father is a traditional ruler in Nasarawa State and a brother of former Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura,” quoting another unnamed source.

“He is my uncle. The entire family is in distress. I am personally worried…The wife of the officer is worried.

“Our prayer is may they not be found guilty of the allegation,” a statement it ascribed to a family member of the said officer.
