The House of Representatives has passed a bill seeking to create a new state in the south-west geopolitical zone for second reading.
The proposed legislation is sponsored by Abass Adigun, the lawmaker representing the Ibadan Northeast/Ibadan Southeast federal constituency.
The proposal scaled the second reading during Thursday’s plenary.
During the bill debate, Adigun noted that while Enugu and Kaduna, once capitals of the former Western Region, have since become states, Ibadan has not, adding it represents a “monumental step toward equitable development through federalism and realisation of the long-held aspiration of the people of Ibadan.”
He asserted that Ibadan has the population and landmass to become a state, claiming one local government in Ibadan is bigger than three local governments in Bayelsa State.
This bill adds to the growing list of bills seeking to create new states in the country.
Benjamin Kalu, the deputy speaker, who presided over plenary, referred the bill to the committee on constitutional review.
