A lawyer, Barrister Ahmed Abdulrahman, has been detained alongside four others
over allegation that they cyberbullied and blackmailed Senator Shehu Baba Umar, Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence.
Senator Umar is representing Bauchi South in the Red Chamber.
The Federal High Court in Abuja handed down the detention order on Thursday.
The other defendants are: Daure David, Ishaq Abubakar Muhammed, Abdulrashid Abdullahi Musa, and Nasiru Usman Abubakar.
They were arraigned by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) on an 11-count charge bordering on cyberbullying, advance fee fraud, and extortion, allegedly involving attempts to blackmail the senator.
After oral arguments by the parties’ lawyers bordering on bail application by the defendants, Justice Rita Offili-Ajumogobia directed that they should be held in custody pending the next hearing of the case which she adjourned to November 10.
