Five masquerades and fifteen others died on Sunday after being run over while entertaining guests during the new yam festival in Umuchu, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Eyewitnesses said a lorry with Enugu registration number LG-66-BBG loaded with plywood, collided with other vehicles after a brake failure, and killed 20 people among them five masquerades(file image) and guests who had gathered at the village square nearby in celebration of the new yam festival.
Several others sustained various degrees of injury.
However the lorry driver escaped unhurt from the accident but has been arrested by the police according to police spokesman in Anambra State, Ali Okechukwu.
