Victoria Mba, whose 22-year-old son, was beaten and shot to death by policemen attached to a residence of the Cross River Governor, Bassey Otu, in Calabar, has rejected N5m the state government offered her family.
Mrs Mba, deceased son, Moses Mba, had gone to one of the governor’s residences, demanding to see Otu on grounds of having a spiritual message for him.
Apprehenticed to a pastor, the evangelist was denied access to the governor by the security operatives attached to the residence who went on to beat the lad and shot him in the leg for refusing to go away.
About a week after the incident, Moses succumbed to the injuries from the police assault and gunshot which prompted his bereaved mother to cry out, demanding that officers responsible for his son’s killing should be served justice.
The latest, according to Punchng is that the state governor paid a condolence visit to the distraught family on Thursday and offered N5m to them but it was declined.
“They brought N5m. We rejected it. Is the value of my son’s life N5m? They said it was a condolence visit, but I don’t know where condolence is done with money in that way. I want justice, not money,” the publication quoted Mrs Mba as saying.
“When we paid the condolence visit, we felt it was only proper to support the bereaved family in terms of burial arrangements. It was not for any other reason. We could not have visited and left them empty-handed,” this Punchng attributed to the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Linus Obogo.
