Three masquerades have been arrested in Akwa Ibom State for displaying on the streets without getting police permission and beating up people.
Recall that two weeks ago, Governor Umo Eno issued an executive order with which he banned masquerades from operating in the streets without due approval of the Police.
The governor declared his support for culture but said the decision was taken to address chaos and insecurity related to the activities of masquerades.
The erring masquerades’ arrest was made known by the State Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Azare while briefing newsmen in Uyo on Monday.
In Azare’s account the masquerades were arrested in the Eket Local Government Area of the state during the Ekid Day celebration, which was held on Saturday.
The CP informed that those the apprehended masquerades injured were receiving medical treatment in hospitals in the state.
“The Command is in compliance with the Executive Order of the Akwa Ibom State Government restricting masquerade activities to approved locations with mandatory police permission and security coverage.
“This measure has significantly reduced violence and disorder,” the police chief said.
