Former Minister of Transportation and former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has revealed that former President Olusegun Obasanjo made alleged efforts to imprison him.

Amaechi made this allegations in an interview with Nigerian filmmaker Chude Jideonwo.

“Obasanjo tried to put me in jail. Ask him that,” he said tersely without going into detail of how Obasanjo allegedly tried to jail him.

In the viral interview the ex-governor and ex-minister made mixed remarks about the ex-president, saying in short in one breath that he (Obasanjo) was full of himself and “I’ve never seen a Nigerian who loves Nigeria the way he does.”

Also according to him, “I like Obasanjo a lot, and he knows that. I’m also one of his worst critics.

“Obasanjo has a very queer way of thinking. He’s messianic in nature. He believes he’s the only person who can save Nigeria.”

Amaechi also hit at Nigeria’s electoral culture, arguing that voter participation remains weak despite widespread public criticism of political leaders.

When challenged about the need for politicians to earn public trust in order to secure votes, he dismissed the notion that elections in Nigeria are primarily driven by voter engagement.

“Nigerians don’t vote,” he said. “As a governor, I know this for a fact.”
