Senator Francis Fadahunsi has moved to douse the storm trailing his viral “kill Accord” remark, insisting that he was referring to defeating the Accord Party at the ballot box and not calling for violence against its members.
The Osun East Senatorial District lawmaker issued the clarification on Tuesday after his comment sparked outrage and accusations that he allegedly encouraged attacks on supporters of the Accord Party ahead of the August 15, 2026 governorship election.
The controversy erupted after a video surfaced on social media showing Fadahunsi addressing a gathering of All Progressives Congress (APC) supporters in Ilesa, where he spoke in Yoruba and was heard using the phrase “kill Accord”.
In the footage, the senator accused Accord Party members of attacking APC supporters and urged those present to “kill Accord”, while also daring attendees to record his remarks and share them online.
The statement triggered backlash, with critics interpreting the comment as a call for violence against political opponents.
But in a bid to clarify his position, Fadahunsi, through his media office in Osun, said the controversial phrase was only a political expression aimed at securing victory over Accord Party through votes.
In a statement titled “Kill Osun Accord with Votes, Not Violence, Senator Fadahunsi Tells APC,” the senator said his words were meant to encourage supporters to defeat the party through a peaceful democratic process.
The statement explained that the remark was “purely political and metaphorical”, stressing that it was never intended to promote attacks, intimidation or harm against any individual or political group.
“Senator Fadahunsi’s statement was a call on supporters to overwhelmingly reject the Accord Party at the ballot box through lawful, peaceful and democratic means during the August 15 governorship election,” the statement said.
The lawmaker’s media team said the clarification became necessary following what it described as the “misinterpretation and distortion” of his remarks after the video went viral.
It insisted that Fadahunsi had always supported a peaceful electoral process and had never advocated the use of force in political contests.
“At no point did Senator Fadahunsi advocate violence, intimidation or any form of physical attack against members or supporters of the Accord Party or any other political party,” the statement added.
The senator urged APC supporters, political actors and voters across the state to maintain peace before, during and after the election.
He also called on security agencies to remain neutral and ensure that eligible voters could freely exercise their rights without fear or intimidation.
Fadahunsi maintained that the outcome of the election should be determined by the people through their votes, insisting that democracy must prevail over violence.
The statement further appealed to members of the public not to attach a violent meaning to his words, saying the comment was intended to encourage electoral victory “through the power of the ballot and not through violence.”
