Nigerian football has been thrown into mourning following the shocking death of Katsina United defender Ozor Chinedu, who collapsed and died during a pre-season friendly match against Niger Tornadoes on Tuesday morning.
The newly signed player reportedly slumped on the pitch just 10 to 15 minutes into the encounter played at the Karkanda Stadium in Katsina, sending teammates, officials and spectators into panic.
Ozor Chinedu, who had only recently joined Katsina United ahead of the new season, was said to have suddenly collapsed while the game was still in its early stages. Medical personnel immediately rushed to his aid before he was taken to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment.
However, efforts to save his life proved unsuccessful as he was later confirmed dead, leaving the club and the wider football community devastated.
The defender’s death came barely days after he began a new chapter of his career with Katsina United. Before making the move, Chinedu was part of Kano Pillars, where he built a reputation as a dependable defender.
News of his sudden passing triggered an outpouring of grief from football fans, players and officials, with many describing his death as a painful loss to the Nigerian football family.
Tributes flooded social media as supporters struggled to come to terms with the tragedy.
One emotional tribute described the incident as devastating for Nigerian football, while praying for strength for Chinedu’s family, friends and loved ones to cope with the loss.
Another mourner lamented that the defender had just begun a fresh journey with Katsina United before his life was cut short.
“He just started a new chapter with Katsina United and it’s so sad it ended this way. Football will miss him,” the tribute read.
The circumstances surrounding the medical emergency that led to Chinedu’s collapse and subsequent death were yet to be made public as of press time.
Katsina United and football stakeholders are expected to release further statements as investigations into the heartbreaking incident continue.
