Tragedy has struck the Nigerian Law School after a 23-year-old student, Faith Ajoke Alayande, died following a fall from the rooftop of a four-storey hostel building at the institution’s Lagos Campus.
Alayande, a student of the Nigerian Law School, Enugu Campus, was temporarily accommodated at the Lagos Campus while undergoing her externship programme in Lagos.
The Nigerian Law School confirmed the fatal incident in a statement issued on Monday and signed by its Secretary to the Council and Director of Administration, Aderonke O. Osho.
According to the institution, the incident happened at about 4am on Friday, August 7, 2026, when Alayande fell from the hostel rooftop and died from the incident.
While the exact circumstances surrounding her death were still being investigated, suicide has been speculated as the possible cause following reports that a suicide note was found before she was discovered unresponsive.
The Lagos State Police Command had earlier confirmed the incident, saying the case was reported to the Victoria Island Police Division by the hostel’s Chief Matron at about 6:30am.
Police operatives reportedly visited the scene and evacuated Alayande’s body to a morgue for preservation.
According to the police account, a hostel mate and a relative reportedly discovered what was believed to be a suicide note and began searching for Alayande before she was found unresponsive after the fall.
However, the police have not conclusively established that suicide was the cause of her death, as investigations are ongoing to determine what happened in the moments leading up to the fatal incident.
The Law School also stopped short of giving details about the circumstances surrounding the fall, saying management was working with the relevant authorities and Alayande’s family to establish the facts.
Alayande’s death has meanwhile left those who knew her devastated.
Uchenna Marvin, who said he supervised her during her university years, described her death as heartbreaking. He recalled that she had previously participated in discussions about the right to life and the right to die while conducting research in Medical Law.
Alayande had graduated from university before proceeding to the Nigerian Law School earlier this year.
The Nigerian Law School expressed deep sadness over the tragedy and offered condolences to her family, colleagues and everyone affected by the loss.
The institution also appealed to the public and the media to respect the family’s privacy and allow them space to mourn.
The management further reaffirmed its commitment to the safety, welfare and wellbeing of students and staff.
