Shockwaves have hit Delta State as the government wielded the big stick, suspending Works Commissioner for Highways and Urban Roads, Reuben Izeze, indefinitely over allegations of involvement in an alleged assault on a top aide to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
The commissioner’s suspension, which took immediate effect, was announced on Monday by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Kingsley Emu, in a statement that has sparked fresh tension across the state.
The government said the drastic move was necessary to clear the way for a full-scale probe into claims linking Izeze to the alleged attack on Senior Special Assistant on Protocol to the governor, Simon Mudi, popularly known as Temple.
According to the state government, the suspension would allow security agencies to carry out their duties without interference and uncover the truth behind the controversy.
The statement stressed that the administration would not compromise on the safety of residents or allow anyone, regardless of status, to stand above the law.
The development follows reports of a violent incident at the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI), Effurun, where Mudi was allegedly attacked by suspected hoodlums said to be connected to the commissioner.
Sources had claimed that the governor’s aide suffered serious injuries during the reported assault and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Tension heightened after reports emerged that Izeze was picked up by the police and taken to Ekpan Police Station for questioning over the incident.
However, authorities had yet to publicly provide full details about the commissioner’s reported arrest or reveal the outcome of their initial inquiries.
The alleged attack, which reportedly occurred on July 26, 2026, has continued to generate controversy, with questions surrounding the identities of those involved and the extent of any alleged link to the suspended commissioner.
With the suspension now in place, security agencies are expected to dig deeper into the allegations and determine what truly happened.
The Delta State Government, however, maintained that the action against Izeze was a step to protect the integrity of the investigation and should not be interpreted as a verdict of guilt.
The commissioner remains innocent until the completion of investigations and any further legal process.
