A man who allegedly posed as an operative of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has been arrested after reportedly fleecing unsuspecting members of the public of ₦3 million in Maiduguri, Borno State.
The suspect, identified as Nuhu Dahiru, was arrested by operatives of the EFCC Maiduguri Zonal Directorate following intelligence linking him to the alleged impersonation and fraud.
The anti-graft agency announced his arrest on Monday through a post on its official X handle.
Dahiru was reportedly picked up at Tashan Bama, along Bama Road, Maiduguri, after investigators received information that he had been moving around and presenting himself as an EFCC officer to gain the trust of his targets.
According to the commission, the suspect allegedly used the fake identity to obtain ₦3 million from members of the public under false pretences.
The EFCC said the entire ₦3 million was recovered from him when he was arrested.
The commission said the arrest followed “credible intelligence indicating that he had been parading himself as an officer of the EFCC, and thereby defrauding unsuspecting members of the public.”
Dahiru is expected to face prosecution after investigators complete their probe into the alleged offence.
The EFCC warned members of the public to be wary of fraudsters who impersonate its officials to extort or deceive them.
