A shocking kidnap plot allegedly targeting the wives of two respected bishops has been uncovered in Plateau State, with a clergyman and two serving military personnel arrested over the alleged scheme.
The Plateau State Police Command said the suspects were picked up after receiving intelligence about a planned abduction attempt in Jos, the state capital.
The alleged operation was reportedly foiled on Friday, August 7, 2026, at about 2:10 p.m., following swift action by security operatives.
Among those arrested was 42-year-old Rev. Hassan Yunisim Mijah, a resident of Tudun Wada, Jos North Local Government Area.
Security analyst and counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama reported that Mijah was allegedly working with Sgt. Ezra Sunday of the Nigerian Air Force and OS Usman Khalid of the Nigerian Navy to abduct the wives of Bishop Ephraim Gongden and retired Bishop Benjamin Kwashi.
The two security personnel are reportedly attached to Sector 1 of Operation ENDURING PEACE (OPEP), a joint security initiative established to maintain peace and tackle criminal activities in Plateau State.
The bishops are said to reside in the Rantya area of Jos South Local Government Area, where the alleged kidnap targets reportedly have connections.
According to reports, the suspects were arrested after operatives of the Vigilance and Criminal Response Unit (VCRU), led by its commander, launched an operation based on intelligence gathered about the alleged plot.
Police sources said the three suspects were taken into custody and subjected to questioning, during which they allegedly admitted involvement in the planned crime.
“On interrogation, suspects confessed to the crime,” the police reportedly stated.
The arrest has sparked concerns over the alleged involvement of serving military personnel in a criminal operation, particularly one allegedly aimed at the families of prominent Christian leaders.
The Plateau Police Command has reportedly informed the leadership of Operation ENDURING PEACE about the arrest of the two personnel attached to the unit.
Meanwhile, investigations are continuing as authorities move to uncover the full details of the alleged conspiracy, establish if more suspects are involved, and determine whether the arrested individuals were part of a larger criminal network.
