Former Niger State governor, Aliyu Babangida, said that the northern part of the country has an ocean of ill-qualified teachers.

Babangida stated this on Tuesday in Abuja at the conference organised by the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation with the theme, “Education in Northern Nigeria: Status, Challenges, and the Way Forward”.

Speaking in his capacity as Chairman of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees, the ex-governor asserted that the shortage of qualified teachers in the region has adverse effects on the quality of education.

He said 50 percent of those in the business are not up to scratch.

In his contribution, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alh. Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, said the bad fortune of education in the north is a function of policy makers’ sad tendency not to walk their talks.

According to him, “That is our problem, implementation. If we don’t implement, we come back next year for another conference and still talk about the same thing. So, let’s be more serious now because if you have identified a problem, you have half of the solution. Now, let’s look for the other half of the solution so that we can move forward.”
