The Ogun State House of Assembly has passed a bill establishing conditions for the safe termination of pregnancy, putting the controversial issue at the centre of a new reproductive health law in the state.
The legislation, titled the Ogun State Safe Termination of Pregnancy Law, 2026, was passed on Thursday during plenary presided over by Speaker Oludaisi Elemide at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
The bill seeks to define the circumstances under which pregnancy can be safely terminated in accordance with specified legal indications.
It also seeks to tackle maternal deaths and complications through measures promoting safe motherhood, reproductive healthcare and protection of reproductive health rights.
With the Assembly’s approval, the bill has now been transmitted to Governor Dapo Abiodun for assent.
The development followed the presentation of the report of the House Committee on Health by its chairman, Wahab Haruna.
Lawmakers subsequently considered the bill clause by clause before approving its third reading through a unanimous voice vote.
Clerk/Head of Legislative Service, Sakiru Adabakin, read the bill for the third time before the Speaker directed that a clean copy be sent to the governor.
The legislation is one of several major bills considered by the Assembly, which also passed first readings for bills dealing with gender balance in public offices, victims’ rights, violent and extortion-related offences, and the prohibition of human sacrifice.
EX-DEPUTY SPEAKER’S IMPEACHMENT CANCELLED
Meanwhile, the Assembly has converted the 2021 impeachment of former Deputy Speaker Dare Kadiri to voluntary resignation.
Kadiri, who represented Ijebu North II Constituency, was removed from office in March 2021 following allegations of gross misconduct.
The former lawmaker later appealed to the 10th Assembly to change the record of his removal to voluntary resignation.
The Committee of the Whole considered the request on August 18, 2026, with Chief Whip Omobola Bakare presenting its report.
The committee said Kadiri’s appeal was not intended to reopen the circumstances surrounding his impeachment but to allow him to end that chapter of his public service on a peaceful and dignified note.
The House subsequently adopted the report through a voice vote.
