Powerful Secretary to the Akwa Ibom State Government, Obong Umana Okon Umana, according to impeccable sources, may soon emerge as the head of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

According to those who are in the know, this publication understands that Umana who is reputed as one of the most powerful and wealthiest people in the Land of Promise was recently taken to meet with President Goodluck Jonathan shortly after his name was presented by Governor Godswill Akpabio.

If his nomination by the Governor goes through, it would be the first time that Umana would be stepping out of the corridors of power in Akwa Ibom State since he was appointed Commissioner for Finance in the Victor Attah administration in 1999. He held the Finance portfolio for the two terms that Attah was Governor and was appointed Secretary to the State Government on the swearing in of the Akpabio administration, a position which he has held since.

Observers are however watching to see how Obong Umana, who has always shown so much confidence that he would take office as Governor at the expiration of the current administration in 2015 would react to this step which may take him out of calculations to occupy the Hill Top Mansion in two years’ time, although we understand that his appointment was guided by the conviction of the governor that with his wealth of experience, Umana would be in the position to adequately represent the state at the NDDC.
