Amnesty International has lent its voice to the planned nationwide protest over rising cost of living.

The protest scheduled for August 1 —15 and gathering momentum on social media has divided the nation, with counter-protest by pro-government elements also planned for the same period.

Threat by the latter to scuttle the protest excited reaction from Amnesty International on Tuesday on X.

“Threatening peaceful protesters is unlawful. It is a clear attack on freedom of assembly — which is guaranteed by international law and Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution:

“Nigerians must not be denied the constitutionally and internationally guaranteed right to peaceful protest; through veiled threats of violence and false insinuations,” the global human rights body wrote.
