Another Nigerian, Balogun Ridwan, fighting on the side of Russia in the country’s war with Ukraine was captured and eventually killed.
A Ukrainian media platform, UnitedMedia24, made this known in a report in which it was said that Ridwan was recruited from Nigeria on the pretext of working as an engineer.
This adds to the growing list of Nigerians who fell for the job trap only to end up in Russian military and losing their Iives to the over-a-decade war.
The platform quoted Ridwan to have said that on getting to Russia, he was forced to sign a contract with the Russian army with the contract document written in Russian, which he didn’t understand.
“The day we were signing the contract, I didn’t understand the language. They didn’t allow us to use our phones to translate, so we signed our contracts. I told them already about my job. Maybe they were going to put me in my field. I didn’t know they would use me, “ he reportedly stated.
As per the news medium account, Ridwan received a few weeks of training and was eventually deployed to the frontline where he surrendered to the Ukrainian troops during a raid in January.
The report added that Mr Ridwan has died in combat but was coy about which of the country he was fighting for when he met his death.
