Nigeria’s Ambassador to Benin Republic, Dr Olukayode Aluko said, on the average twenty-five Nigerians are subject of arrest in the neighbouring West African country daily.

Aluko gave this undesirable statistics on enquiry from Punchng about the arrest of one Okail Shedrack, a Nigerian studying at the Cyprus International University, Nicosia, by the police in Porto-Novo for internet fraud on February 7.

Claims on social media in Nigeria are generally that Shedrack was innocent of the charge, a report, Aluko disclaimed.

“The question you should ask here is what is a Cyprus student doing here on holiday?

“Two of my officers have been handling it, and the authorities there have confirmed that they have electronic evidence that he was involved in some of these criminal acts here and he has confessed,” he told the paper.

The ambassador added that unscrupulous Nigerian youths in the business of Internet fraud and prostitution are blackening the reputation of Nigeria saying, “Look, it’s so embarrassing here, on the average, they arrest about 25 Nigerians every day over this same issue, mostly young people. Most times, we would ensure release of some of them.

“They now embarrass innocent Nigerians.”
