The reign of terror of suspected bandit commander Ado Aleiro has reportedly suffered a major setback following a deadly confrontation in Doma village, Katsina State, where he allegedly lost his son, eight relatives and dozens of motorcycles used by his gang.
Fresh intelligence from security sources, analysed by counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama, suggested that the incident may have severely affected the strength and movement capacity of Aleiro’s armed group.
The report, dated August 9, stated that the gang reportedly deployed about 30 motorcycles during the encounter, but none was said to have returned, with their riders allegedly killed in the operation.
Among the casualties reportedly recorded was Aleiro’s son, alongside eight other members of his family.
The reported loss of the motorcycles is considered a serious setback for the group, as such criminal networks depend on them for moving fighters, transporting supplies, carrying out raids and escaping security operations across remote communities.
Following the incident, intelligence reports indicated that Aleiro was later seen travelling alone on a motorcycle around the Sakya Dutse, Higi and Asaula axis, suggesting a possible disruption in his usual support structure.
Security operatives were said to be closely monitoring his movements in a bid to establish his next location and determine whether remaining members of his network are capable of regrouping.
The report also revealed that the bandit leader had expressed concerns over the safety of a proposed illegal mining location at Gidan Buhari in Chadiya Ward, Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
Sources said Aleiro feared the site could become vulnerable to attacks by local vigilantes, popularly known as Yansakai, operating from Tsafe town.
The development reportedly heightened fears within the gang following the heavy casualties suffered in the Katsina encounter and the possible exposure of some of its operational routes.
Security experts believe the setback could provide an opportunity for security forces to intensify pressure on the group and prevent surviving fighters from reorganising.
The loss of mobility assets, especially motorcycles, could also reduce the gang’s ability to move through difficult locations, launch surprise attacks and evade security patrols.
The reported clash comes amid ongoing efforts by security forces to tackle banditry across Zamfara, Katsina and other North-West states under Operation FANSAN YANMA.
Authorities are expected to maintain surveillance on Aleiro and his associates while assessing the extent of the damage caused to the network and working to stop any attempt to rebuild its operations.
