The explosion is the second in the area in recent time as similar incident occurred less than a month ago,  the Divisional Police Officer of Ipaja Ayobo Police Station,  S.O Oriloye,  told our correspondent at the scene, adding that cause of both were unknown.

However,  the chairman of the area’s Residents Association, who simply identified himself as Mr. Yemi alleged that the pipeline caught fire as an unnamed man was bathing near it around 6:15am with a burning candle.

He added that alleged pipeline vandals made a vain efforts to put off the fire with extinguishers.

But a mid drama broke out when staff of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation arrived the scene to a frosty reception with residents blaming them for the incident, a charge they denied.

Meanwhile, three residents of the area, Mr. Akeem Akinlagun,  Mrs. Roselyn Kenneth in a chat with our correspondent, appealed to the Lagos State government to come to their aid saying their houses are too close to the pipeline.
