A woman battling sickle cell disease and severe leg ulcers for nearly eight years, Bukola Sogbuyi-Whitney, has launched an emotional appeal for $50,000 to continue treatment and save her limbs.
Bukola Sogbuyi-Whitney, who has lived with sickle cell disease all her life, said her condition has drastically affected her health, mobility, independence and ability to work.
She is currently undergoing advanced limb-preservation treatment at Houston Methodist Hospital in the United States after years of surgeries, procedures, wound care and other treatments.
According to Bukola, her medical team is optimistic about her progress, but she still faces multiple surgeries, continuous wound care, medication and months of recovery.
The prolonged illness has also left her unable to work, making it difficult for her to cope with the growing medical expenses.
In a GoFundMe appeal, Bukola said many of the costs associated with her treatment were not fully covered by insurance, leaving her with an overwhelming financial burden.
She is seeking $50,000 to help fund her continuing treatment and recovery.
As of Wednesday, $16,784 had been raised towards the target, leaving $33,216 still needed.
Bukola said her ultimate goal was to preserve her limbs, heal from the debilitating ulcers, regain her independence and return to the life she loves.
She appealed to members of the public to support her through donations as she continues what has become an eight-year battle against the complications of sickle cell disease.
“I am humbly asking for your support as I continue fighting to preserve my limbs, heal, regain my independence, and return to the life I love,” she said.
