The death of a motor mechanic, Chukwudi Okereke Abraham, in the custody of the police in Rivers State has become a matter of controversy.
Also controversial is what made the police to arrest Abraham.
The latter’s workplace was at the Spare Parts Market in Ikoku on the Mile 2 axis of Port Harcourt.
The account of the police is that he died a natural death in detention following his arrest for allegedly partaking in a lady’s abduction from whom he and his gang collected N3.5m in ransom.
The Police added that the deceased was a member of a popular cult group, Dey-Gbam, and allegedly into armed robbery.
Adverting to the allegations levelled at his son, Abraham Okereke at a press conference in Port Harcourt debunked it.
He declared that his son was tortured to death by police and was not into any ungodly enterprise.
The Senior Abraham went on to appeal for support to bring those responsible for his son’s death to justice, saying, “I want the government of Nigeria and Rivers State to come and help. Even the governor should assist me because, like the policeman said, I don’t have anybody. It is by the grace of God and the help of civil society that I saw my son’s corpse where the police hid it from me.”
