A serving National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Okebaram Stanley Chimaraoke, has drowned in a creek in Bayelsa State, sparking a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Chimaraoke, a former Students’ Union Government (SUG) President of the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Owerri, reportedly vanished while swimming in a creek in Nembe Local Government Area on Monday. Residents said his body was later recovered.
His tragic death has left friends, colleagues and members of the student community devastated, with many demanding answers over what really happened.
The Bayelsa State Police Command confirmed the incident, saying detectives have launched a full-scale investigation.
Police spokesperson, DSP Musa Mohammed, said the command was working to establish the circumstances that led to the corps member’s death.
Meanwhile, the Bayelsa Comrade Family (BCF) has debunked viral claims that Chimaraoke was murdered and his body dumped in the creek.
In a statement signed by its spokesman, Comrade Ayakeme Paebi, the group said available information showed the corps member accidentally drowned while swimming.
The group urged bloggers, media organisations and members of the public to stop spreading unverified reports, warning that the rumours only deepen the pain of the bereaved family and create unnecessary tension.
Despite the clarification, police insist investigations are still ongoing to uncover the exact cause and circumstances of Chimaraoke’s death.
