The federal government has dropped hints about making face masks wearing compulsory generally to curtail the spread of coronavirus.

The Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19 hinted this at its briefing in Abuja on Thursday where two of the members spoke highly of face masks as a measure to prevent the virus spread.

The DG of Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, Chikwe Ihekweazu, said the government was in the process of mandating the public to wear face masks on the strength of its merit in the battle against the pandemic.

Ihekweazu said, “On the material for mask, a virus is a tiny particle so none of the materials will completely protect you. But on the balance of evidence, it is better to wear something. If you are transmitting the virus, it (mask) reduces the transmission by 50 to 60 per cent.”

In the same vein, the taskforce Chairman and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, urged tailors to go into face masks mass production.
