A lecturer at the University of Ilorin, Chief Elijah Ola Olorunsuwa, has reportedly been picked up from his residence in Ilorin, Kwara State, in a mysterious early-morning operation.
Elijah Ola Olorunsuwa was allegedly arrested around 5am on Wednesday when about eight police officers arrived at his home in a black Hilux vehicle.
The reason for the arrest was not immediately known as of press time.
Sources familiar with the incident said the policemen took the lecturer away from his residence shortly after the operation and allegedly headed towards Kogi State.
The development has sparked questions over why the university lecturer was arrested and where he was being taken.
A Kogi-based public commentator and youth leader, Monday Job Sesere, reportedly confirmed the arrest.
Sesere also alleged that the operation was ordered by Kogi State Security Adviser, retired Commander Jerry Omodara.
However, the allegation could not be independently verified, while neither the police nor the Kogi State Government had publicly explained the circumstances surrounding Olorunsuwa’s reported arrest.
It was also unclear whether the lecturer had been accused of any offence or whether he was being taken to Kogi for questioning over a particular matter.
Olorunsuwa is a lecturer in the Department of Political Science at the University of Ilorin, with academic interests covering elections, comparative politics, political parties, legislative governance, federalism and Nigerian politics.
His profile on the university’s website identifies him as a lecturer in the department. He is also the National Publicity Secretary of the University of Ilorin Alumni Association, a position he secured in the association’s 2024 election.
Beyond his academic career, Olorunsuwa has been involved in public and community affairs, particularly issues concerning Kogi State.
The Kogi State Government has previously identified him as President of the Oke-Offin Development Association in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area.
His reported arrest comes at a time of heightened political activity in Kogi ahead of the 2027 elections, although there is no confirmed evidence linking the arrest to politics.
For now, the circumstances surrounding the 5am operation, the identity of the officers involved and Olorunsuwa’s current whereabouts remain unclear.
