A former councillor in Benue State has been remanded in prison after allegedly beating a woman and pushing her into a fire.
Daniel Ujah, 43, a former councillor representing Awume-Icho Ward in Ohimini Local Government Area, was ordered to be kept at the Otukpo Correctional Centre over allegations of assault and attempted culpable homicide.
Ujah was arraigned before the Upper Area Court 2 in Otukpo on charges including criminal trespass, intimidation, criminal force and assault, causing grievous hurt and attempted culpable homicide.
The case followed a petition reportedly filed by Rebecca Adole at the Area Commander’s Office in Otukpo.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), the alleged incident happened on August 28, 2026, when Ujah reportedly entered the compound of Adole’s mother, Amina Iduh, at Akwutulo, Awume.
The prosecution alleged that Ujah assaulted the woman, beat her repeatedly and pushed her into a fire, leaving her with injuries to her buttocks and burns to her clothes.
The FIR further stated that the injured woman was taken to hospital by police officers from Onyagede, Ohimini LGA, where she was receiving treatment.
Ujah was also accused of threatening to kill the woman and allegedly boasting that nobody could stop him.
When the matter came up for mention on Wednesday, Ujah pleaded not guilty to the charges.
His lawyer, Rev. O. Simon, who appeared on behalf of P.O. Ella, applied for his bail.
But the prosecution, represented by Inspector Nancy Alechenu, opposed the application.
In her ruling, Magistrate Hasia Garuba ordered that Ujah be remanded at the Otukpo Correctional Centre pending further proceedings.
The court adjourned the case until September 22, 2026, for further mention.
