Forty-two students of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, have been expelled from the institution over examination malpractice.
Those affected are 31 Higher National Diploma students and 11 National Diploma students drawn from various institutes and programmes.
The expulsion followed investigations by the Polytechnic’s Examination Malpractice Committee into allegations levelled against the students.
The development was announced in a statement issued on Monday by the Principal Assistant Registrar, Academic Board Matters Division, Ibrahim Esin.
According to Esin, the students were found guilty after the committee concluded its investigation into the allegations.
He said the offences were considered a breach of the Matriculation Oath taken by the students when they were admitted into the institution.
The Polytechnic said the expulsions were approved in line with provisions of its Students’ Handbook, effectively ending the affected students’ relationship with the institution.
The Institute of Finance and Management Studies recorded the highest number of expelled students, with 23 students shown the way out.
The Institute of Technology followed with eight, while four students each were expelled from the Institute of Information and Communication Technology and the Centre for Continuing Education.
Two students from the Institute of Health Technology were also expelled, while the Institute of General Studies recorded one case.
The affected students were drawn from programmes including Mechatronics Engineering, Civil Engineering, Strategic Communication, Journalism and Media Studies, Public Administration, Business Administration, Banking and Finance and Accountancy.
Others include Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Medical Imaging Technology, Microfinance and Entrepreneurship Development, Social Development, Procurement and Supply Chain Management, and Industrial and Labour Relations.
The management also ordered the expelled students to return any Polytechnic property still in their possession.
Esin directed them to hand over such items to their respective Heads of Department or other designated authorities.
The Polytechnic said the disciplinary action was taken after the examination malpractice investigations were concluded and the expulsions approved by the appropriate authorities.
